The Seven Dhatus

Dhatus are the various tissues of the human body.

In Siddha, they are listed as:
  • Saram (chyle)
  • Chenneer (blood)
  • Oon (muscle)
  • Kozhuppu (fat)
  • Enbu (bones)
  • Moolai (marrow)
  • Sukila (sperm) or Sronitha (ovum)

The following table helps us understand the functions of the Dhatus and problems that arise in case of malfunctions.

Dhatu Function An Increase Causes A Deficiency Causes
Saram Regulates growth and development. Keeps spirits up and nourishes blood. Loss of appetite and other complaints as in the case of increased Kapha. Loss of weight, fatigue, dry skin, and diminished sense perceptions.
Chenneer Nourishes the muscles and intellect. Boils and tumours, colic, high blood pressure, jaundice, red eye and skin, hematuria. Tiredness, anaemia.
Oon Gives shape to body, enables physical activity and nourishes fat. Tumours around the face, neck, abdomen, thigh, and genitalia. Muscular wasting all over the body.
Kozhuppu Lubricates the different organs and maintains the oily matter of the body. As in excess oon and dyspnoea. Pain.
Enbu Supports the system responsible for posture and physical movements. Bigger bones and dentures. Weak bones and brittle nails.
Moolai Fills bony cavity, nourishes semen, increases endurance and a shining appearance. Heaviness, swollen eyes and fingers, oliguria, non healing ulcers. Osteoporosis, and sunken eye.
Suckila or Sronitha Responsible for reproduction. Increased sexual activity. Failure to reproduce, pain in the genitals.
