Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital

The CHILDS (Children Health Institute Laboratory, Diagnostic Services) Trust Hospital was founded in the International Year of the Child. On 27^th April, 1978 Dr. M.S.Ramakrishnan and his colleagues started a small four bed hospital in a rented premises at Chennai. Until then there was no speciality hospital for children in Chennai and the service catered to a felt need.

Today CHILDS Trust is a two hundred-bed hospital and a premier childcare centre in the country. This growth was made possible by the enthusiastic support of many philanthropic organisations, particularly the Rotarians of Canada through the Rotary International and WHO.

In the last three decades CHILDS Trust has invested heavily in state-of-the-art equipment and extensive child care services. The Sankara Mutt (Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham) under the auspices of Jagadguru Sri. Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal has contributed generously and reduced the financial burden on the hospital. This has given the hospital strength and guidance to work for greater achievement. (The Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham was established by Adi Sankara, a Hindu philosopher-saint. Today, this religious body runs or supervises a number of subsidised schools and medical institutions.)

During the last three years, CHILDS Trust has treated over 2,20,000 children. It has a well equipped Neo-Natalogy department, Intensive Care Unit, Radiology and Imaging department comprising of Sonography and other Scanning facilities. The hospital runs free clinics for needy out patients at Manali, Royapuram and Kolapakkam in Chennai. The hospital is a recognised and fully accredited academic institution where students for Dip.N.B. (Paediatric Medicine) and Dip.N.B (Paediatric Surgery) are trained.

The hospital also provides facilities for Doctoral (Ph.D) studies for candidates doing research in Paediatric Medicine and Paediatric Surgery.

The hospital is recognised as a training centre in paediatrics for nursing and para-medical students.

The hospital also administers DPT, OPV, BCG and Measles Vaccines free of cost.

The CHILDS Trust Medical Research Foundation (CTMRF) conducts fundamental clinical research and offers counselling in paediatric health with emphasis on congenital deformities. The aim of the Foundation is to work towards Children health, Mothers Wellbeing and Family Welfare. Achieving this in the time of fast paced technological changes in a multicultural ethos is a challenge.

CONSULTANTS

Dr. R Shanmugasundaram DCH, MD

Dr. R Shanmugasundaram is a Consultant Neonatologist at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He completed his DCH in 1968 and his MD in 1973. He was the Assistant Research Medical Officer under ICMR at Institute of Child Health. He was also an Honorary Consultant in Southern Railway Hospital. He obtained his Fellowship in Neonatology. He is a life member of the National Neonatology Forum and is also a Life Member of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics. He is an executive member of National Neonatology Forum.

Dr. B R Nammalwar is a Consultant Nephrologist at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He did his DCH from Stanley Medical College, Chennai in 1966. He completed his MD from Madras Medical College in 1970 and subsequently completed his DM in 1982 from the same Institution. He was formerly the secretary of Indian Society of Nephrology (Southern Chapter) and later the Chairman of Indian Society of Nephrology (Southern Chapter). He is the member of Indian Academy of Paediatrics and Indian Society of Nephrology. He is also a member of International Paediatric Nephrology Association and National Kidney Foundation - U.S.A. He is a Senior Editor for IAP Textbook of Pediatrics.

Dr. S Namasivayam is a Paediatric surgeon, at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He completed his MS (General Surgery) in 1987. He subsequently completed his MCh from M.G.R Medical University, Chennai in 1990. He was a Registrar in the department of Urology at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. He was also a Special Trainee in General Surgery at Government General Hospital, Chennai. He is a member of the surgical team for the Integrated Haemodialysis and Kidney Transplant Programme, Chennai.

Dr. Andal is a Senior Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She did her M.D (Paed) and also completed her M.B.A (Health Care Hospital Administration). She is a Life Member of Indian Society of Nephrology. She is also a life member of Indian Academy Paediatrics and a member of International Society of Nephrology. She also works as a part time Consultant at Apollo Hospitals. She has vast experience in the management of all types of Paediatric renal problems which include Paediatric Dialysis management. She worked for 25 years in General Paediatrics and for ten years was in charge of the department of Paediatric Nephrology at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi. She has published many papers on Paediatrics.

Dr. Sarala Rajajee is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DCH from the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Chennai in 1973, she subsequently completed her MD from the same Institution in 1979. She did her MNAMS (Paediatrics) from National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in 1979. She also completed her Ph.D in 1986.

Dr. Lalitha Janakiraman is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DCH from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore in 1980. She completed her MD in 1982. She is the Zonal Co-ordinator for the Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course. She worked as an Observer in Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and also worked as an Observer in Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in Cook County Hospital, Chicago.

Dr. Kalpana Gowrishankar is a Senior Registrar at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DCH from the Madras Medical College in 1982. She also completed her Ph.D. from M.G.R. Medical University in 1998. She was working as an Observer at the George Town University Hospitals (USA). She is actively involved in Neonatology Care. She has also presented many papers on Paediatrics.

Dr. T Vasanthi is a Senior Registrar at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DNB from KKCTH in 1996. She worked as Medical Officer at Velankanni Hospital, Tirunelveli and also worked as a Medical officer at S.K.S Hospital, Salem.

Dr. E Padmapriya is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DCH in 1991 and subsequently qualified in DNB in 1993. She was a special trainee in Paediatrics in the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Chennai. She also worked as a medical officer in the Paediatric Department of the Public Health Centre, Chennai.

Dr. Thillathunisa is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DNB in 1997. She has previously worked as a Medical Officer at KHM Hospital. She also worked as Senior Houseman in Paediatrics at the Institute of Child Health, Chennai.

Dr. K Ramesh is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He did his MD (Pathology) from PGI, Chandigarh in 1984. He has 18 years experience as Medical Teacher & Surgical Pathologist. He was an Assistant Director in CLTRI for Chingleput. He was a formerly a lecturer in the Department of Pathology, faculty of Medicine, Al Arab Medical University. Later he was the Assistant Professor in the same department. He has also published many articles in Indexed Medical Journals.

Dr. S Ramesh is a Consultant Anaesthesiologist at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He did his MD (Anaesthesia) from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He was working as a special trainee in General Surgery in Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. He was also working as a Non-Post Graduate Junior Resident in Anaesthesiology & Urology in JIPMER, Pondicherry. He was also a Registrar, Anaesthesia in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. He has also published and presented many papers on Anaesthesia.

Dr. Jayanti T K is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DNB in 1997. She has worked as RMO in KPR Hospital Research Centre, Kerala. She was a Resident of Trinity Acute Care Hospital. She is also currently working as a Duty MO at Santosh Hospitals, Chennai.

Dr. Latha Dhathathri is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DCH in CMCH, Vellore (1996) and subsequently completed her DNB in 1997.

Dr. Jaishree R is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her MD (Paediatrics) from the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Madras Medical College in 1999.

Dr. T Ravikumar is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He completed his DNB from the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Madras Medical College in 1997.

Dr. Janaki S is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DNB in 1995.

Dr. S Ezhilarasi is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DNB in 1999.

Dr. Anuradha Srinivasan is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her MD (Paediatrics) from S.C.B. Medical College, Orissa in 1999.

Dr. Suchitra Ranjit is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DCH in 1986 and did her M.D (Paediatrics) in 1987. She underwent training in Neonatal Intensive Care as the Registrar in Neonatalogy at the Mercy Maternity Hospital, Australia. She also underwent training in Paediatric Critical Care as Registrar at the Paediatric ICU and High Dependency Unit, Westmead Hospital, Australia. She has also published and presented papers on Paediatrics.

Dr. Sivabalan is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He completed his MD (Paediatrics) from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal. He was a Senior Resident in Paediatrics at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Chennai. He is a Life member of IMA (Indian Medical Association), IAP (Indian Academy of Paediatrics) and IAP-Respiratory Chapter.

Dr. G D Karthikeyan is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. He completed his D.Ch. from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal in 1997.

Dr. Vedavati Subramanyam is a Consultant at the CHILDS Trust Hospital. She completed her DCH from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi in 1964. She also completed her MD (Paediatrics) from Madras Medical College in 1968. She has a teaching experience of 16 years for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Students. She worked as a Consultant and also as the Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Beish General Hospital, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She was also an Observer at the Middlesex Hospital U.K. She is a Life Member of Indian Academy of Paediatrics & National Neonatology Forum. She is a member of International College of Paediatrics. Her special area of interest is Growth and Development in Adolescence.
