Kovai Medical Center & Hospital (KMCH) is a Rs. 50 crore, 350 bed multi-disciplinary super corporate hospital located on Avinashi Road on the Coimbatore-Chennai highway. It is equipped with modern equipments like CT Scanner, Angiography equipment, DSA, operating microscope, Mammography equipment, C-arm, Color Doppler, etc., There are over 30 Medical departments and 11 Operation Theatres at the hospital. Nearly 500 out patients and in-patients are treated everyday. 25 major and minor surgeries are performed everyday. Super-specialty procedures like Coronary Bypass Surgeries, Hip & Knee replacements, Kidney transplants and complex Neuro surgeries are regularly done in this hospital. The hospital has two satellite medical centres at Perundurai and Ramnagar, Coimbatore.

The hospital specialises in emergency and trauma care treatment. On an average 30 emergency cases are admitted per day in the hospital. Road traffic accidents account for 50% of the emergency admissions. KMCH has collaborated with various Rotary clubs of district 3200 and has established four trauma care centres on the Coimbatore-Chennai national highway (NH47) to a distance of about 100Kms extending upto Erode. Centres have been established at Perundurai, Thindal (near Erode), Tekkalur, Karumathampati and in Coimbatore city. These centres have been provided with ambulance facility to pick-up accident victims on NH47 at short notice.

KMCH is a government approved centre for Renal transplant, Corneal transplant and Heart transplant. It has one of the best rehabilitation departments in the country. Apart from the well-equipped Occupational therapy and Physiotherapy department, hospital has also organised a Prosthetic and Orthotic department.

Recognised by National board of Examination for training DNB candidates in General surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology and Anesthesiology, this hospital is also recognised by the Royal college of Surgeons, Edinburgh to train FRCS candidates. Under its Research and Educational Trust KMCH offers Postgraduate Paramedical courses in Physiotherapy and Nursing, and Graduate courses in Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Nursing. Diploma programmes for Radiology technician, Lab technician, Cathlab technician, Nephrology technician and Nursing assistant training programmes.

Dr. John AC Thanakumar MS, MNAMS, FRCS (Ed.), FRCS (G)

Dr. John AC Thanakumar is a Consultant surgeon. He completed his MBBS, MS and MNAMS in Christian Medical College, Vellore and went on to do FRCS (Ed.) and FRCS (G). He is a Specialist in advanced laparoscopic, thoracoscopic and minimally invasive surgery as well as pancreatic, liver and oesophagical surgery. He is in charge of the FRCS and Dip.NB post-graduate programme. He has authored numerous articles and has featured as faculty in various national and international conferences since 1990. He also is in charge of laparoscopic animal laboratory for training surgeons in laparoscopy and thoracoscopy.

Dr. K I Joseph is a consultant in Internal Medicine. He is involved in Preventive Healthcare (Master Health Check-up Programmes) and in Primary and Secondary Prevention of Ischaemic Heart disease. His special area of interest is work up for Pyrexia of Unknown Origin (PUO). He is also interested in the subject of Dyslipidaemia.

Dr. Edumund is a Consultant Physiatrist. He is the HOD-Dept of P M & R, Principal KMCH College of Physiotherapy. His area of interest is Pain Management: Low Back pain, Neck pain, Osteoarthoroses and other Chronic. His work involves soft tissue rheumatisms and Rehabilitation, Amputee care and amputee rehabilitation, Spinal cord injury rehabilitation, Stroke rehabilitation, rehabilitation of post polio residual paralysis and other Paediatric musculo skeletal anomalies.

Dr. T V Ramanikanth is the Consultant Otologist, Rhinologist, head and neck surgeon. His expertise includes: Ear-Mastoid & middle ear reconstructive surgery, Surgery for Meniere's disease & dizziness, Surgery for CSOM & wet ears, Cochlear implantation & Bone anchored hearing aids for severe deafness, Surgery for Otosclerosis, Paediatric hearing loss problems. Nose-Endoscopic sinus surgeries, Trans sphenoidal pituitary surgery, Septorhinoplasty for deviated nose, Surgery for epistaxis (bleeding from nose). Head & Neck-Phonosurgery for voice disorders, Cancer surgery of the Head & neck, Thyroid surgery & surgery of salivary glands, Speech & Voice restoration in laryngectomies, Surgery for airway problems.

Prof. Dr. V Nandakumar is the Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Kovai Medical Center & Hospital Limited. He was a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Calicut Medical college. He underwent Cadiothoracic Surgical training at C.M.C Hospital Vellore, St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, Alfred Hospital Melbourne & Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. His areas of interest are: Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Beating Heart Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (MICAS) Mitral Valve Repairs & Valve Replacements, Heart and lung Transplantation, Surgery for Aortic Aneurysm, Thoracic Surgery-Lung Resection & Oesophageal Surgery, Repair of Congenital Heart Defects-ASD, VSD, PDA etc.

Dr. D Ganesan has been a Consultant Neuro Surgeon at KMCH since 1990. He specialises in Head & Spinal trauma. His areas of interest are Pituitary Tumour, Acoustic Neuro Fibroma, Meningioma, and Paediatric Neuro surgeries. He is the convener for continuing Medical Education programmes at KMCH.

Dr. J K B C Parthiban is a Consultant Neuro Surgeon at KMCH. He Specialised Surgeries in Microsurgery on Lumbar disc, Anterior Cervical Discoidectomies, Spinal fusions and Spinal Instrumentations. His area of interest is management of spinal disorders, including Degenerative spines, Congenital & developmental spinal disorders, Spinal tumours, Spinal Arterio-Venous malformations and Spinal Trauma.

Dr. Rajamani is a Consultant Rheumatologist & Physician at KMCH. He underwent his entire general medical and Rheumatology training in the U.K. He is involved in the general management of all Rheumatologist problems, with special interests in the management of connective tissue disease, Vasculities and Osteoporosis.

Dr. Sara V Thomas is a consultant for ENT Surgery at KMCH. Areas of interest are infections of ENT, head and Neck, Malignancies of head and Neck, Neurology and Neuro-otology, Microsurgery of ear and Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.

Dr. S G Thirumalaisamy is a consultant for Orthopaedics at KMCH. His area of interest is in Fracture Management, Joint Replacement, and Arthroscopy.

Dr. K Chockalingam is a consultant and interventional Cardiologist at KMCH. He completed his MD (internal Medicine) at Madras Medical College, Dr.M.G.R. Medical University and subsequently his DM (Cardiology) at Stanley Medical College from the same University. He is also an Executive Committee Member Cardiology Society of India. His special interest is Rotational atherectomy, Rota stenting & Small vessel stenting.

Dr. Mathew Cherian is a Consultant Vascular and Interventional Radiologist at KMCH. His area of interest is Angioplasty & Stenting, Embolisation, GDC coiling can treat Aneurysms in the brain without Surgery, IVC Filters, Chemoembolisation, Fallopian Tube Recanalisation, Biliary and Oesophageal Stenting.

Dr. S Balasundaram is a consultant in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon at KMCH. He trained in Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery at University Hospital of Wales, Western Infirmary, Glasgow and University Hospital of Liverpool at U.K. More than 13 years of experience in the above speciality at United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. He has completed six cardiac surgery research projects and published 29 research and review articles in International and National journals of Cardiothoracic surgery. His area of work includes cardiac surgery, Congenital (Birth defects), Heart valve Repair and Replacement surgery and Coronary Artery By pass Surgery, Thoracic surgery for lung and pleural diseases and peripheral vascular surgery. His areas of interest are Paediatric cardiac surgery, Valve repair surgery and Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery.

Dr. O N Paramasivan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at KMCH. His area of expertise includes: Hip replacement, Knee replacement, Elbow replacement, Shoulder replacement, Bone tumour Surgery, Shoulder and Elbow surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedic surgery, Complex Fracture Surgery, Pelvic and Acetabular Fracture surgery, Bracheal Plexus surgery.

Dr. Thomas Alexander is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at KMCH. He underwent his undergraduate, postgraduate and superspeciality training in Cardiology from the Christian Medical College, Vellore. He worked as a consultant in the Department of Cardiology of CMC Vellore from 1989 to 1991. From 1991 to 1993 he did his fellowship in Interventional Cardiology from Epworth Hospital, Melbourne University in Australia.

His area of specialisation is Interventional Cardiology. He has developed one of the busiest units in South India. All types of coronary, valvular and congenital interventions are performed here.

He has published over 30 papers in various National and International journals. He has been a faculty member at many National meetings and workshops. He is an associate fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a former governing body member of the Indian College of Cardiology. He has been an invited International faculty member at Interventional meetings in China and Singapore.

Dr. Sanath Aithal is a consultant for Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology at KMCH. He did his MD from KMCH Hubli, Karnataka. He subsequently completed his Diplomate National Board in New Delhi. His areas of interest are Leprosy, Connective Tissue Disorders & Vasculitis, Skin problems of Multisystemic disorder, Pulse Therapy, Skin & psychiatry, Therapy of Chronic skin Disease & Disfiguring skin Lesions and Pediatric skin problems.
