Pharmacokinetics Cefuroxime attains higher CSF concentration, hence used in meningitis. It is used parenterally as well as orally. Indications Cefuroxime is active against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria.It is resistant to beta-lactamases. It is used in meningitis caused by H.influenza, meningococci and pneumococci and for therapy of gonorrhea. Routes of Administration and Dosage For bacterial infections: Oral suspension dose in Adults : The oral suspension is usually used only in children. Oral suspension dose in children up to 12 years of age: 10 to 15 milligrams per kilogram of body weight every twelve hours for six to ten days. For tablet dosage form in Adults: 125 to 500 mg every twelve hours. Tablet dosage form in Children up to 12 years of age: 125 mg every twelve hours. For injection dosage form in Adults : 750 mg to 1.5 grams every eight hours IV. For injection dosage form in Children:60mgs/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses.Gonorrhoea is treated with a single dose of 1.5 grams IM, the total 1.5-gram dose is divided into two doses and injected I.M. at two separate places on the body, and given along with a single oral 1 gram dose of Probenecid. Contra Indications Cefuroxime is contraindicated in hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Precautions Precautions are to be taken in Renal disease, first trimester of pregnancy, during concurrent administration of diuretics and in the elderly. Interactions Few interactions have been reported Brand Names Cefogen(Zeita), Ceftum (Glaxo), Cefuril(J.K.Ind), Fextum(Dee-Pharma), Furoxil(Torrent), Kerozixe(Eli- Lily), Supacef(Glaxo), Zocef(Alkem).
