Pharmacokinetics

Given orally absorption of Cloxacillin is interfered with by food. It reaches high plasma levels in an hour. It is highly concentrated in the kidneys.

Indications

Cloxacillin is effective against Penicillinase producing Staphylococcus. It also acts against Strep Pyogenes,Strep Viridans, Strep Pneumonia.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

For bacterial infections: For oral dosage form (capsules and oral solution):Adults, teenagers, and children weighing more than 20 kilograms (kg): 250 to 500 milligrams (mg) every six hours.Infants and children weighing up to 20Kgs. : The usual dose is 6.25 to 12.5 mg per kg of body weight every six to eight hours. For injection dosage form:Adults, teenagers, and children weighing more than 20 kg: 250 to 500 mg, injected IV every six to eight hours.Infants and children weighing up to 20 kg : The usual dose is 6.25 to 12.5 mg per kg of body weight, injected IV every six to eight hours.

Contra Indications

Contraindicated in hepatic failure, Lactation, Hypersensitivity to penicillin and pregnancy.

Precautions

In Allergy,: Patients with a history of general allergies may be more likely to develop a severe reaction to Cloxacillin. Renal disease: Patients with renal disease may have an increased chance of adverse effects. Stomach or intestinal disease, (especially colitis, including colitis caused by antibiotics) : Patients with a history of stomach or intestinal disease may be more likely to develop colitis while taking Cloxacillin.

Interactions

There is loss of potency of cloxacilin when used with Erythromycin, gentamycin and Kanamycin. Cloxacillin should not be added to blood products and IV lipids.
