Pharmacokinetics It is well absorbed orally, but its bioavailablity is reduced when given with antacids. Theraupetic effect lasts for about 5-8 hours. It is excreted mainly in the urine, within 24 hours mainly as unchanged drug. It can cross the placental barrier and is secreted in milk. Indications Famotidine belongs to the class H2-receptor antagonists.They are used to treat duodenal ulcers and prevent their recurrence,gastric ulcers and in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome . Routes of Administration and Dosage 40 mgs at bed time or 20 mg b. d Contra Indications Famotidine is contraindicated in : Renal disease. In Hepatic disease: the level of famotidine may build up in the bloodstream, which increases the risk of adverse effects. Precautions Special precautions to be taken in pregnancy, lactation and in children . Interactions Famotidine may decrease the effects of itraconazole or ketoconazole, hence famotidine should be taken at least 2 hours after these drugs.
