Pharmacokinetics After IM injection Amikacin reaches a peak level in 60 to 90 mins. It is bound to plasma protein and is excreted unchanged by glomerular filtration via the kidneys. It is not affected by most body enzymes and hence it is more effective than Gentamycin. Indications It is active against many gram negative and some gram positive organisms like E.Coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Citrobacter, Staph. Epidermidis, Listeria Monocytogenes and Campylobacter. Routes of Administration and Dosage Adults and Children: 15 mg/kg/day in 2 to 3 divided doses every 8 or 12 hrs. Contra Indications Contraindicated in hypersenitivity to Aminoglycosides, Renal impairment, hepatic disease and hypotension. Precautions Precautions are to be taken if given in patients with nephrotoxicity, allergy, fever, ototoxicity,and convulsions. Interactions There is increased ototoxicity when used with ethacrynic acid. It potentiates neuromuscular blocking agents.
